Dakine Décor

Ed Henderson In Hawaii, the slang words "Da Kine" mean that something is very, very good. They are derrived from "The Kind", short for "The Best Kind".

We believe in our products, and we believe that they are most definitely Da Kine. In other words, the very best decor item you can find with a Hawaiian flavor. And because we can, we sell them at as reasonable a price as you will find anywhere.

Happy customers are the keys to success. It is a simple rule that a lot of companies tend to forget, and we promise to remember. We want you to be pleased with your purchase, so we buy only the best quality merchandise and materials, and we try to describe our products accurately so there are no ugly surprises when you open your packages.

My name is Ed Henderson, and I am here to help with your order.

Aloha
Ed Henderson

Updates and News

Wow…This is not easy. For all of you out there that want the American dream of owning your own retail store or website, let me tell you something: While it is the most fun job you will ever have, it is not an easy way to live. I know this sounds like a complaint, but it is not. It is simply a warning to anyone who thinks retailing is the life for them, that you need to prepare yourself for reality.

I would like to tell you a little bit about Dakine Decor and how we got from 2004 to now. I think it is an interesting story, but you are welcome to stop reading anytime. After all, there is plenty of shopping left to do! Still reading? Ok, in 2004 I had a bit of a life change. A mid life crisis most people would say, but that is not what this is about. However, it is what got me searching for something new in my life. My job as a user interface designer was lucrative, but I needed something new. I had this brainstorm one evening after selling some things on eBay that I could have a lot of fun buying surf related decor items, keeping some to decorate my new apartment, and selling the rest on eBay. Six months later my apartment was stacked with merchandise boxes floor to ceiling, and I was shipping a dozen orders daily with sales from my own dot com address. One of my life's great successes I would say.

Fast forward 4 years. I was rocking in the online retail world. Seriously, I was one guy selling so much merchandise out of an upstairs apartment that it would spin your head. It was certainly spinning mine. Oh, and I still had that pesky full time job as a user interface designer for the largest oil and gas corporation in the world. Something had to give, so I decided to make the jump. It is here that I retired from the real world and opened a retail store to mimic the website. Dakine Decor opened its doors on the "Historic Strand" in Galveston Texas in April of 2008. What an adventure! But things went wrong pretty fast. Namely, Hurricane Ike went wrong, and the economy went wrong. There are probably not many of you that remember Hurricane Ike, because the big news of the day was the crashing economy. This was about the time of sub-prime lending, and banks going into default. I think that it was three or four days after Ike covered our entire island in up to 10 feet of salt water that the stock market crashed big, and our little hurricane was no longer national news. But in Galveston, people were only concerned with one thing. "Where is your water line?" was repeated so many times that I had t-shirts printed with the question.

My store took on five feet of water. Insurance was no good, so I basically shoveled my entire life into the street for the bulldozers to haul away. Yes, it took a bull dozer, a crane and a dump truck to clear the street in front of my store.

Hurricane Ike was devastating, but on the Gulf Coast, hurricanes are just a fact of life. We take the bad with the good, and when we get knocked down we get back up, brush ourselves off, and don't complain. Ok, maybe we complain a little, but still...Life goes on. And it did. It was a difficult year, but we got past it. In fact, we thrived for a while as locals had plenty of insurance money to spend, and nearly every house on the island had to be redecorated.

So fast forward another 4 years. Now it is 2012, the islander's insurance money long since spent, and the slow economy has really taken the wind from our sails. Anyone who is familiar with our website over the years will tell you that it is not what it used to be. Mostly because our really cool vendors, with the really cool stuff all went out of business. I watched one wholesaler after another close their doors, or stop making the stuff we buy. You see, at Dakine Decor our specialty has always been the unique, hard to get stuff. We don't like competing in the main stream. Target and Wal-Mart have that covered rather well.

But enough complaining, once again the time has come again for us to pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off. And that is just what we have done. We want to thank our loyal customers for sticking with us through the tough times. We apologize for the year or so that we spent low on inventory, and slow in service. My only excuse is that with age it becomes increasingly harder to manage the two full time jobs...Yes, I had to un-retire myself for a while to get through the tough economy. But again, Dakine Decor is back to full throttle, and searching hard for the unique and hard to find products that have made us a success from the start.

Once again, thank you so much for trusting us with your purchase.

Sincerely,
Ed Henderson - Owner, Dakine Decor
